Russia’s request to freeze a FIFA ban on its soccer teams ahead of next week’s World Cup qualifying playoffs was dismissed on Friday.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld FIFA’s decision to ban Russia from its competitions. The ruling is similar to CAS’ decision earlier in the week upholding UEFA’s ban. Russia will not be allowed to play their World Cup qualifier against Poland next Thursday.
Russia had asked for the bans to be frozen until their full appeals proceedings had been concluded. CAS’ decision almost certainly ends Russia’s participation in the World Cup in Qatar later this year.
