The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps Major General Shuaibu Ibrahim has once again called on Corps Members to take advantage of the opportunities presented by the service year and the NYSC Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme (SAED) to learn a trade .
Speaking during his visit to 2022 Batch ‘A’ Stream I Corps Members deployed to Kano and Zamfara states at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Kusala Dam, Karaye, Kano State, the DG admonished the corps members to pick a skill or enterprise of interest during the SAED training in camp and pursue same with passion. This he added will make them self-reliant instead of employment chasing non-existent white collar jobs.
Major General Ibrahim added that the proposed NYSC Trust Fund which has passed first and second reading, including a public hearing in the Federal House of Representatives is intended to provide start-up capital to Corps Members who want to go into business after the service year. This he further stated will have a positive multiplier effect that will take many Nigerian youths out of the labour market.
The Director General also called on the Corps Members to shun cultism, cybercrime, drug abuse, unnecessary travels, night journeys and urged them to be security conscious. While encouraging them to be disciplined, the DG added that many Corps Members in the past had made the scheme proud by adding value to their host communities. He there charged this Batch to follow suit and identify ways of leaving positive legacies wherever they are posted to for their primary assignment.
