A former Commissioner for Information in Cross River State who was also former Chairman of Calabar Municipal Council, Mr. Edet Okon Asim, has landed in police custody for allegedly defiling a 15-year-old girl (name withheld).
An information gathered shows that the suspect had been defiling the girl for three years running. The girl was allegedly lured into an illicit relationship with the former commissioner, who was said to be dating the mother, but the relationship with the teenager reportedly witnessed two previous abortions, but the third abortion, which was said to have been with the knowledge of her mother, whose name was simply given as Mrs. Stella, allegedly damaged her uterus, a development that has brought the matter into public glare.
Speaking with one of her neighbours, who pleaded for anonymity, said that Mrs. Stella was married to a popular Calabar-based pastor, now late, who was a good friend to Asim and had two children for the deceased clergyman.
“The first one (girl) happened to be the victim while the second is a boy. Not long after the pastor died, Ms Stella was believed to have gone into relationship with Mr. Asim whom she called her “Destiny Saver”.
“The victim’s mother, who is said to be a caterer, maintains apartments in Uyo, and Calabar where the victim stays and attends the Federal Government Girls’ College, Calabar,”
“The mother had reportedly been warning her daughter against opening up on the matter and collaborated with the suspect in the serial abuse.
“And after the third abortion had been carried out by a quack, her womb became perforated. The girl’s teacher, whose name was shielded, was said to have found out and shared the story on a WhatsApp page where human rights activist and the founder of Project Alert, a non-governmental organization, which specialises in handling such cases, Mrs. Josephine Chukwuma, is a subscriber.”
In the information gathered so far, shows that Mrs. Stella, who has been Asim’s consented to the relationship between him and her daughter.
Mrs. Josephine was said to have swung into action and contacted the Basic Rights Council Initiative founded by child rights activist, Barrister James Ibor, which also informed the police and this led to the arrest of Mr. Asim and Ms. Stella.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Irene Ugbo confirmed on Thursday via a phone call that there was a case reported against the former commissioner.
Ihe conversation: “Yes, they are in our custody. Edet Okon Asim and a woman were dating each other and later the man started dating the daughter. Before now, she has done two abortions for the man. The woman seems to have been using the man to collect money.
“This is the third abortion that has resulted to complication. The case was reported at the Airport police station. We are going to transfer the case to the State CID,”
