*****Promises To Respect Party Zoning

Senate Leader, Ahmad Lawan on Friday evening ended speculations about his intention to occupy the seat of Senate President in the 9th Assembly when in the presence of 10 other Senators- elect and mostly from his ruling All Progressives Congress(APC) announced his ambition to vie for the position.

It’s Lawan’s second attempt at the coveted title after losing the position to the incumbent Senate President, Bukola Saraki in 2015 despite being the preferred candidate of the party.

Since Lawan arrived the National Assembly in 1999, first as a member of the then All Peoples Party(APP) and later All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) in the House of Representatives, Ahmad Lawan has remained a strong voice, first in the opposition, but has become a rallying point for his party now in power.

The Yobe State lawmaker will be counting heavily on his wealth of experience in both chambers to edge out his toughest challengers in Senator Ali Ndume and former governor of Gombe State, Danjuma Goje who are also from the same Northeast zone.

Apart from experience, what Lawan has in abundance is loyalty for his party, an attribute he demonstrated again when he said he will accept the party’s position ahead of his personal ambition.

Lawan however hopes to deliver quality and credible leadership if he emerges as the number three citizen, helping his party to achieve its campaign promises and stabilise relationship with the executive arm of government.

Lawan is one of Nigeria’s longest serving Senators.
